The Road to War
How the National League’s pursuit of bigger profits opened the door to its greatest rival
In the fall of 1899, the National League had a problem. It was making money. Just not enough.
Its solution was to get smaller and cut four clubs. What the magnates didn’t count on was Ban Johnson, Charles Comiskey and a minor league with major league ambitions.
The Road to War is a short, illustrated account of the months before baseball’s great war, from the fall of 1899 to the spring of 1900, drawn from the newspapers of the day. It’s the prelude to my books 1901 and 1902, and to 1903, coming this fall.
